THE SEA ICE/ HAVISEN
THE STORY OF THE MOTHER of the SEA
The dining table is an interpretation of the sea ice and the story of the Greenlandic ’Mother of the Sea’.
In the past the Inuits believed that there was a woman in the ocean controlling all sea animals - they called her the ’Mother of the Sea’.
The Inuits thought that when there was no seals to hunt and no fish to catch, the Mother of the Sea was angry with the Inuits from not taking care of nature and the only way to make her happy again, was to make the shaman travel to her house in the ocean.
The shaman would find the Mother of the Sea in her house with her hair all filtered by the misdeeds that the people had done. The animals would not be released before the shaman had taking out all the misdeeds from her hair.
The tabletop is made of recycled glass. Different techniques will be used to create the interpretation of the sea ice, which will be in collaboration with Maj-Britt Zelmer Olsen. The welded frame is made of casted iron and a stone base of Greenlandic granite with a cutout of a face which will stabilise the table.
